Day 1 – Up to St Bees

Arrived safely in St Bees (a week ago actually, but the wifi up here is a bit ropey!). We arrived in fog, and left in fog so I can’t tell you much about the place, except that it feels a bit like the end of the world and all a bit flat- but then it’s off season I guess.

I did find out a little bit about the origins of the name St Bees though. Apparently it’s a corrupton of St Bega. She was an Irish princess who fled her homeland sometime between the seventh and tenth centuries, in order to avoid an arranged marriage. She landed here and founded a monastery…
